The entire list of Monster Hunter games, listed in chronological order, is provided below, along with brief summaries of each title.

The generations of Monster Hunter games are separated. The original Japanese release of each generation is available alongside improved versions or ports for other consoles and nations. There are also spin-off titles in some generations.

The Monster Hunter games, specifically the mainline games, will be listed below in chronological order of their release dates.

Monster Hunter (2004)

The first Monster Hunter video game was initially released in Japan and then the United States. The player is a Kokoto Village hunter apprentice who must complete tasks to advance in the hunter guild. By overcoming these obstacles, the player gains the necessary skills to battle monsters and ultimately defend his village from Wyverns, which are essentially dragons.

The formula that has become so well-known today is built into the game. In Monster Hunter, there are eight different kinds of weapons, and monsters can provide players with resources. These are the only two items that are still in the series.

Monster Hunter Freedom (2005)

An improved version of Monster Hunter is called Freedom. The video game was designed to be an addition to the first Monster Hunter and was known as Monster Hunter G in Japan. Monster Hunter Freedom for the PlayStation Portable was made available in the United States. A few of the new features included dual swords, cosmetic changes to monsters, and an increase in the number of different monsters of varying difficulties. A sequel to the game was created because of its popularity.

Monster Hunter 2 (2006)

Elder Dragons Kushala Daora, Teostra, and Lunastra were among the new monster species introduced in Monster Hunter 2.

New weapons and armor that fully embraced Monster Hunter 2’s new gem system were released alongside the new batch of monsters.

It was possible for the first time for players to create gems by fusing ore and/or monster parts. These gems could then be used to enchant armor and weapons to gain extra skill points.

Later, Monster Hunter Freedom 2—a partial port of MH2—was made available for the PSP. It featured many modifications to the original, including the removal of time flow elements, maps, and some monsters.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (2007)

Like its predecessor, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is an improved version of Monster Hunter 2. In order to add more content, the game was ported to the PlayStation Portable. Players now have access to more quests to complete, new monster subspecies, and enhanced visuals. The first of many mobile Monster Hunter games, a mobile version of this game was also released for iOS devices.

Monster Hunter Frontier (2007)

An MMORPG called Monster Hunter Frontier was developed for the PC and Xbox 360. Currently, only Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Macau, China, offer the game. The game is not accessible outside of those regions, but if you have a VPN, you can always get around these limitations. The same monsters, quests, items, and armor that you would find in any Monster Hunter game are present in Monster Hunter Frontier.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (2008)

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, a PSP-exclusive expansion, was introduced by Capcom in 2008.

With new tools, enemies, and locales, it extends gameplay by fifty hours. Up to four players can join a hunting party, which adds a cooperative multiplayer feature.

Monster Hunter 3 Tri (2009)

Due to the PS3’s expensive development costs, Capcom changed its mind and decided to release Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii instead of the PS3.

This marked a significant shift for the series and the first of many times that MH games made their Nintendo console debuts.

Monster Hunter 3 added new underwater sections to the previous games’ ecosystems, redesigned the monster AI, and increased the number of available monsters to a total of 18.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, an improved port of MH3, was made available for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, enabling players to move their save data between platforms.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2011)

In 2010, Capcom launched anenhanced version for the PlayStation3 and the Third Monster Hunter Portable on PlayStation Portable. But that game is only available in Japan.

As a result, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was released in 2011 for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It is the global version.

Monster Hunter 4 (2013)

For Western audiences, Monster Hunter 4 includes a number of QoL enhancements, such as improved localization and more fluid traversal when mounting creatures and climbing walls.

Further improvements in monster AI led to creatures using the terrain around them to their advantage, making hunts more difficult and immersive.

With the addition of the Insect Glaive and the Charge Blade, the number of weapon classes in the series was increased from 12 to 14.

New base camps and NPCs would appear as players advanced, giving MH4 the most diverse cast of any game to date.

In Japan, Monster Hunter 4G, an upgraded version of the game, was released. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, a North American and European version, followed.

Monster Hunter Generations (2016)

Monster Hunter Generations, also known as Monster Hunter X in Japan, made its Nintendo 3DS debut in 2015. But in 2016, it got to global markets.

Playthrough mechanics in the spin-off game are similar to those in the original games. It features novel combat techniques as well as special attacks. Additionally, it gives players control over Felines, a magical cat that frequently goes on adventures with the main character.

Last but not least, Monster Hunter Generations features the same 14 weapon archetypes as Monster Hunter 4, along with familiar monsters and environments.

Monster Hunter Stories (2016)

The author of Monster Hunter Stories is Marvelous Studio. 2016 saw the game’s launch in Japan, and 2017 saw its global release under Capcom distribution. It is compatible with the Nintendo 3DS.

The playable character is a Rider, unlike its forerunners. A Rider is a person who has the ability to form a bond with monsters, allowing them to be used in battle, ridden, and made allies.

The protagonist is able to summon ally monsters to fight enemy monsters. Additionally, he has the ability to customize their skills and launch unique attacks while riding them.

Stealing eggs from the monster’s nest is the main objective of the game. In addition, Stories uses a Rock-Paper-Scissor combat system rather than action gameplay.

The Generations spin-off’s most recent iteration is called Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. In 2017 (Japan) and 2018 (globally), it made its Nintendo Switch debut.

In comparison to the original game, the port included some novelties. Two boss-level monsters, a number of game modes, new weapon movements, new monster types, and more were all introduced.

Additionally, it added fresh gameplay elements like the Transfiguration system, higher weapon levels, and daily goals. The latter involves combining armor pieces to create an item that combines stats and aesthetics.

Japan refers to Generations Ultimate as Monster Hunter XX.

Monster Hunter: World (2018)

For the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, Monster Hunter: World is now available. Every feature was modernized and given the focus it required to compete, giving the series its much-needed polish. The first game in the series to feel truly open-world by today’s standards is Monster Hunter: World. There are various monsters, weapons, armor, and other features that you would anticipate from the series.

The player’s freedom from obligation is the best feature. The progression will still be felt whether they follow the main plot or wander around completing side quests.

Monster Hunter: Rise (2021)

The latest mainline game in the series, Monster Hunter Rise, marks a return to the Nintendo system with its release on the Switch alone.

Along with new “Palamute” canine allies, it pits you against enormous monsters while employing a variety of weapons, tools, and environmental traps.

Expanded traversal, which lets you use Wirebugs to scale cliffs and climb structures, is included in the game along with the seamless map design first seen in World.

Overall positive reviews of Rise’s new features and the expansion of World’s gameplay led to the game’s over 6 million copies sold mark as of April 2021.
